INTRODUCTION TO RIVERDALE PHYSICAL EDUCATION-
GENERAL RULES TO SURVIVE THIS CLASS
1. ABSENT = -5 (make-ups allowed)
Show up. If you are absent excused, you will lose 5 points. You MUST present a re-admit slip upon returning to class. You are expected to make up an excused day by attending ONE (1) session during another Phy. Ed. class, study hall, before school, or during lunch. I am required to allow you one additional day to make up your time. In PE class, I usually allow 1 week. After 1 week, no make ups. If your absence is unexcused, you may not make up the day. You cannot have a parent to excuse you from class due to illness or injury. You must present a doctor’s note or note from the trainer.
2. UNEXCUSED TARDY = -5 POINTS Be on time to class AND out of the locker room. If you are late, HAVE A PASS. If you have an EXCUSED pass, there is NO consequence. If you do not have a pass, you will be marked as tardy and not allowed in class until you can present a pass.
3. General behavior-no swearing or horseplay, etc. Do no act disrespectful to your peers or staff. If you disagree with something, disagree later in an appropriate manner, NOT during class. If you display negative behavior, you will earn negative points. -5 to -10 POINTS
4. DETENTIONS: You must report to the office, give the office staff your name and who you are serving your detention for. Detentions must be served in 15 minute blocks at the START of lunch. Do not keep me waiting. You will not be allowed back in class until your detention time has been served appropriately. Detentions must be served at MY convenience, not your. So…behave and this will not be an issue.
5. NOT CHANGED APPROPRIATELY = 2 POINTS; NO MAKE-UPS. Be prepared for class. This included having a proper change of clothes and shoes. SHOES MUST BE APPROPRIATE BY MY STANDARDS. NO ½ SHOES, SANDALS, SLIPPERS, CROCKS, ETC. NO CLEATS DURING FIELD ACTIVITIES.
INAPPROPRIATE CLOTHING: -10 POINTS; NOON DETENTION.
You must have appropriate clothing for this class. No clothing will be allowed that displays any negative messages related to (but not limited to) alcohol, tobacco, or drug use, negative sexual connotations, etc. The result will be dismissal from class until appropriate attire is found.
6. FOOD/SODA/SNACKS/BEVERAGES/GUM/CANDY/JUICE, etc. are NOT allowed in the gym, locker rooms, weight room, stage, etc. Water is allowed in a clear, plastic bottle.
7. NO GUM!!! -5 POINTS; I will begin with pushups, then graduate to more severe consequences such as noon detentions, cleaning the gym, or simple dismissal from class.
8. NO JEWELRY: Jewelry cannot be worn in class due to safety of yourself as well as others. Hair ties must be soft cloth. Rings and watches must be removed. SAFETY FIRST! -1 PER DAY
9. DO NOT SHARE LOCKERS OR CLOTHES. You will not be given someone else’s locker combination to get your clothes. DO NOT CHANGE LOCKERS WITHOUT PERMISSION.
Lock your locks after you are done. Most stolen items are due to locks not being secured at the end of class. Replacement cost on lost or stolen locks is $6.
10. The locker room is OFF LIMITS during normal phy. ed. hours. If you need to use the bathroom during your study hall, use the music hallway bathroom.
11. The parking lot is OFF LIMITS during school hours. If you need to go to the parking lot, you must get a pass from the HS office.
12. DO NOT USE THE GYM AS A SHORT CUT!!
13. Personal stereo equipment will NOT be allowed in class. This also includes pagers, video games, calculator games, cell phones, etc. ITEMS WILL BE CONFISCATED! It against state law to have cell phone and other camera devices in bathrooms and locker rooms!
14. Be active. If you are too sick to participate, stay at home. Medical excuses need a note from the doctor.
15. NO CHEWING TOBACCO OR OTHER TOBACCO PRODUCTS!! DISMISSED FROM CLASS; OUT OF SCHOOL SUSPENSION; -10 OR MORE POINTS. POSSIBLE FAILURE FOR GRADING PERIOD.
GRADING PROCEDURES:
PARTICIPATION: Everyone starts the grading period with 100 points. It is up to you to keep those points. How can you lose points?
ABSENT EXCUSED: -5 (1 SESSION REQUIRED FOR MAKE UPS)
ABSENT UNEXCUSED: -5 (no make up)
TARDY UNEXCUSED: -5
NO CHANGE: -2
NO SHOES: -2; sandals and “1/2” shoes or “crocks DO NOT COUNT AS SHOES IN THIS CLASS!
NEGATIVE BEHAVIOR, -5 or -10 POINTS AND NOON DETENTION
DISMISSED FROM CLASS OR ACTIVITY: -10 AND NOON DETENTION
*All noon-detentions must be made up before returning to class. Most detentions are 15 minutes in length. You may NOT serve them in 1 or 5 minute blocks. You must serve them as they are assigned. If you do not serve your detention, you will not be allowed back into class.
SKILL TEST/PERFORMANCE: This is the basis for Physical Education. This includes tournament results, (W-L), skill tests, fitness results (frequency, intensity, time), and other measures of physical ability. Remember, THE MOTHER OF ALL LEARNING IS REPETITION. 50-100 per assignment.
FITNESS: This is another part of the PERFORMANCE grade. This is a combined grade which includes you time, intensity, distance, and activities performed on fitness days. Points vary from 20-60 points per month.
WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS: This includes tests, homework, worksheets, etc. 40-100 points per assignment. All written work not turned in on time with an acceptable grade will be turned in to NOW OR NOON.
EFFORT: This is a measure of how hard you are working (intensity) and is evaluated with the use of HEART RATE MONITORS which measures your BEATS PER MINUTE (bpm) during exercise. It is based on science.

120-139=C
100-119=D

GRADING SCALE: BASED ON TOTAL POINTS EARNED DURING THE GRADING PERIOD
90-100% A
80-89% B
70-79% C
60-69% D
0-59% F
All “in between scores at or above .5 are rounded up to the next percentage: 79.1=C+; 79.6=B-.
